Voids in a ΛCDM Universe

چکیده
We study the formation and evolution of voids in the dark matter distribution using various simulations of the popular Λ Cold Dark Matter cosmogony. We identify voids by requiring them to be regions of space with a mean overdensity of −0.8 or less – roughly the equivalent of using a Spherical Overdensity group finder for haloes. Each of the simulations contains thousands of voids. The distribution of void sizes in the different simulations shows good agreement when differences in particle and grid resolution are accounted for. Voids very clearly correspond to minima in the smoothed initial density field. Apart from a very weak dependence on the mass resolution, the rescaled mass profiles of voids in the different simulations agree remarkably well. We find a universal void mass profile of the form ρ(< r)/ρ(reff) ∝ exp[(r/reff) α] where reff is the effective radius of a void and α ∼ 2. The mass function of haloes in voids is steeper than that of haloes that populate denser regions. In addition, the abundances of void haloes seem to evolve somewhat more strongly between redshifts ∼ 1 and 0 than the global abundances of haloes.

Shapes and Sizes of Voids in the Λ CDM Universe : Excursion Set Approach
We study the global distribution and morphology of dark matter voids in a ΛCDM universe using density fields generated by N-body simulations. Voids are defined as isolated regions of the low-density excursion set specified via density thresholds, the density thresholds being quantified by the corresponding filling factors, i.e., the fraction of the total volume in the excursion set. Our work en...
متن کاملThe abundance of voids and the excursion set formalism
We present measurements of the number density of voids in the dark matter distribution from a series of N-body simulations of a ΛCDM cosmology. We define voids as spherical regions of ρv = 0.2ρm around density minima in order to relate our results to the predicted abundances using the excursion set formalism. Using a linear underdensity of δv = −2.7, from a spherical evolution model, we find th...

In the current paper, we have studied the effect of dark energy on for-mation where dark energy exists in the background. For this purpose, we used both WMAP9 and Planck data to study how the radius changes with redshift in these mod-els. We used different data sets to fix the cosmological parameters to obtain a solution for a spherical region under collapse. The mechanism of structure formation f...

In this talk presented at the 5th Rencontres du Vietnam 2004, we discuss our preliminary investigations into voids of primordial origin. We show that if voids in the cold dark matter distribution existed at the epoch of decoupling, they could contribute significantly to the apparent rise in cosmic microwave background (CMB) power on small scales detected by the Cosmic Background Imager (CBI) De...

We present a detailed description of our void finding algorithm which is an extension of the prescription by Hoyle and Vogeley (2002). We include a discussion of the reproducibility and robustness of the algorithm as well as the statistical significance of the detected voids. We apply our void finder to the Data Release 5 (DR5) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and identify 232 cosmologica...
